Setting up a second line with eSIM on iPhone

1Phone @ Freshers.in

Before diving into the setup process, it’s important to understand what an eSIM is. An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan without needing a physical SIM card. iPhones that support this technology can use both a physical SIM and an eSIM simultaneously.

Checking iPhone Compatibility

First, ensure your iPhone model supports eSIM technology. As of my last update in April 2023, iPhone XS and later models support eSIM.

Step-by-step guide to set up an eSIM

Step 1: Obtain an eSIM Plan

  • Contact your mobile carrier and request an eSIM plan.
  • Carriers typically provide a QR code or a digital eSIM activation card.

Step 2: Scan the QR Code

  • Go to the ‘Settings’ app on your iPhone.
  • Tap on ‘Cellular’ or ‘Mobile Data’, then select ‘Add Cellular Plan’.
  • Use your iPhone’s camera to scan the QR code provided by your carrier.

Step 3: Label Your Plans

  • Once scanned, you can label your plans (e.g., ‘Personal’ and ‘Business’) for easy identification.

Step 4: Set default line

  • In ‘Settings’ under ‘Cellular’, choose which line you want to use as your default.
  • You can select a default line for calls and another for data, or use the same line for both.

Step 5: Managing calls and messages

  • You can specify which line to use before making a call.
  • For messages, you’ll choose a default number, but you can switch numbers easily in the Messages app settings.

Step 6: International roaming

  • If using an eSIM for travel, ensure ‘Data Roaming’ is on for your eSIM line.

Tips and considerations

  • Dual SIM with an eSIM: If your iPhone already has a physical SIM, the eSIM will act as a second line.
  • Data Usage: Be aware of your data plans on both lines to avoid unexpected charges.
  • Carrier Support: Ensure that your carrier supports eSIM technology.
  • Emergency Calls: During emergency calls, your iPhone will use the line selected for cellular data.
